how can i get rid of the smells?
Firstly, you need to thoroughly clean the areas where he has sprayed, otherwise he will be attracted to top-up his scent when it begins to fade. Cat urine contains ammonia, so do not use bleach or any product that contains it for cleaning, otherwise your cat will simply think that another cat has marked there and he will be tempted to cover that smell by spraying again. Enzymatic products or even biological (enzymatic) washing powder mixed with warm water, will be more effective at removing the scent.
There are several triggers for spraying; smelling a female in heat, marking territory, illness or even stress. (It could even be something as simple as lots of visitors and the house being busier than usual due to Christmas). If you can find out what is causing him to spray, you need to try to remove or alleviate the cause. A Feliway spray or plug-in diffuser may help, as they emit an aroma that comforts cats.
